In bad news for devoted soap fans, CBS long-running daytime drama As The World Turns has taken a turn for the worse.
After more than 50 years on the air, the struggling soap is on the chopping block, thanks to ratings which are sinking faster than a stone.
Earlier this year, CBS pulled the plug on Guiding Light — the nation’s oldest soap opera — and network bosses have confirmed that the fate of ATWT also hangs in the balance. In a last ditch effort to save the show, producers are bringing back audience favorite Tamara Tunie. The actress, who plays medical examiner Melinda Warner on the hot NBC crime drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, was recently recast as attorney Jessica Griffin McKechnie Harris — a role she originated in 1986 and was written out of the soap in 2007.
TV industry analyst Stewart Eller predicts Jessica’s return has come “too little, too late” to attract former fans who long ago abandoned the program.
As The World Turns “is very likely to be gone by year’s end,” Eller says.
