Netflix’s “Making a Murderer” focuses on Steven Avery, the man behind bars everyone is talking about. Avery was convicted in 1985 for the rape of Penny Beerntsen and sentenced to 32 years in prison. After 18 years in prison, Avery was exonerated because of DNA evidence. Then in 2007, Avery was convicted and sentenced to life in prison, without possibility of parole, for killing Teresa Halbach, a photographer who had done work for Avery’s family business. The prosecution presented evidence including: Halbach’s SUV, found in the Avery’s salvage yard, with Avery’s blood, a bullet with Halbach’s DNA embedded in the floor of the garage, and keys to Halbach’s SUV found in Avery’s trailer. Since the release of the documentary, “Making A Murderer,” hundreds of thousands of people have signed online petitions to free convicted murderer Steven Avery. Dr. Phil delves into the details of this controversial case.
